Scratchy, achy throats are common in winter and spring. Colds, the flu, or cheering a favorite team to victory can bring on a mild or short-lived sore throat. But when a sore throat is severe, your child may have strep throat.

Strep throat is a throat infection triggered by bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. It can cause throat redness, severe throat pain, pain when swallowing, fever, chills, headache, nausea, and fatigue. In rare cases, if strep throat is left untreated, it can lead to rheumatic fever or complications such as damage to the heart valves or kidneys.

Strep throat is usually spread by person-to-person contact by saliva or nasal secretions, but your child can also become infected through contaminated food. Children and teens from five to 15 are at the greatest risk of getting strep throat. Young people may have contact with infected children at school or in other crowded places. Adults aren't immunand often get strep throat from their children or coworkers.

To reduce your child's risk of infection, wash your and your child's hands often and thoroughly with warm soap and water. Avoid face touching, but do instruct your child to cover his mouth when sneezing or coughing. Don't share food or 'drinks, and wash eating utensils and dishes with hot soapy water.

These tips can help reduce your chances of passing on a strep infection or getting one, but there's no sure-fire way to prevent the spread of the disease. Having your tonsils out or previous episodes of strep throat offers no protection.

Is It Strep Throat?

If your child has a sore throat that is severe, lasts for more than two days, or has a fever, rash, or headache with a sore throat, he needs to see his doctor. A sore throat is the most common symptom of strep throat, but there may be vomiting and a headache or abdominal pain for several hours before throat pain begins. Your child may also have a fever of up to 104[degree]F.

Once a sore throat begins, your child may have trouble swallowing and might develop painful, swollen glands on his neck. About two out of three children with strep have slightly red throats, while the rest have large, red tonsils. About half of those who get strep throat will have white craters or specks of pus -- or a gray or white coating -- on the tonsils.

Although strep throat is the most common form of bacterial throat infection, it only causes about 15% of all cases of sore throats. Viruses are to blame for most sore throats. Since antibiotics are useless for viral infections, your doctor may do a test to confirm that you have strep throat before prescribing medication.

Antibiotics To The Rescue

If your child does have strep throat, his doctor likely will prescribe antibiotics to treat it. Doctors often prescribe penicillin V (brand name Veetids), erythromycin (Erytab), or clarithromycin (Biaxin) for patients with strep throat.

Most people recover within a few days of starting antibiotic treatment. Even if your child feels better, give him all the antibiotics prescribed by the doctor. If he stops taking the medicine too soon, the infection may return and your child will be at risk of complications such as heart or kidney damage. Twenty-four hours after your child begins antibiotic treatment, you can consider letting him to return to school. Wait until his energy level and temperature return to normal. Use proper hygiene to help prevent transmitting the infection to others.

Soothing The Sore Throat

While you're waiting for the antibiotics to tackle your child's strep infection - or any sore throat- here are a few things you can do to ease your child's raw throat or fever:

* Have your child suck on lozenges or gargle with a warm saltwater solution.

* Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) can ease the pain of a sore throat or headache and will help bring down fever.

* Give your child chicken soup, cold drinks, and other clear, nutritious liquids. Your child may want to drink a soothing mixture of tea, lemon, and honey. Avoid spicy foods and acidic juices such as orange juice. These can increase the throat pain.

* Exposure to cigarette smoke can further irritate your child's already sore throat.

* If your child has a fever, have him rest and limit his activities until the fever is gone.

Be sure your child sees his doctor if the sore throat is severe, lasts for more than two days, or is accompanied by other symptoms of strep throat. A quick test can help determine whether antibiotics may be useful. Strep or not, take steps to soothe his throat and help him rest more comfortably.
